Understanding Parkinson’s disease

There are several things which you can do to help yourself achieve maximum wellness when you have been diagnosed as having Parkinson’s disease. Trying to maintain a positive outlook is perhaps the most valuable while trying to maintain a balance between living as normal a life as possible without pushing yourself too hard and recognising your limitations.

It is also wise to make use and take advantage of physical, occupational and speech therapies which are available to you as these can make such a difference to how you are able to maintain your independence yourself.

There are numerous ways which when combined with any medications you may have been prescribed can help you obtain maximum wellness and able you to enjoy your life to its fullest. You should strive to learn and use more efficient methods of performing daily living activities and think about aspects such as your diet and how you can improve your nutritional needs. Other interventions such as discussion, forums, health groups and a daily exercise routine can all make a huge difference to the quality of life a sufferer has.

Your Doctor and health care providers will of course play a big part in the treatment and care of your disease and it is important that you form a bond with them from the start; your Doctor should of course be competent in dealing with Parkinson’s disease while also being compassionate towards the patient.

Where possible it is wise to seek the advice of two physicians, your family Doctor and a neurologist, your Doctor will be able to advise you on your general overall health in relation to Parkinson’s while a neurologist will be able to advise you on the medication side of the disease. However is it essential that the team collaborate and share information regarding your health.

Keep your own records

It is a good idea also to keep a track of your own health at home, this could include important information such as dates of any special diagnosis, any allergies to medications, test reports, dates of any serious illnesses, surgery you have had and a current list of all the medications that you are taking. A positive attitude towards your illness is essential, people who have an optimistic attitude are know to develop a healthier determination to cope and indeed do succeed at maintaining their own wellness remarkably well.

Take counselling if you need it

Having help with your illness isn’t something you should be ashamed of, we all need help from time to time in life and the person suffering from Parkinson’s should ask for that help without feeling guilty that they cannot cope on their own. By merely asking and admitting they do need help is a huge step towards maintaining their own wellness successfully, counselling can be a great help in getting a person motivated to maintaining their illness especially during the first few months of diagnosis.
